The Dawson County High School Varsity Tigers played hard last week, but lost two of its three games during the grueling week.

The Tigers outplayed an athletic White County (2-5) team last Tuesday to come away with a decisive 59-41 victory. Unfortunately, it would be the lone win of the week for Head Coach Thad Burgess’ team.

Friday the team hosted a very tough Creekview (3-0) team. Despite being close the entire ballgame, Dawson came out on the short end of a 73-64 decision. The loss ended a 3-game winning streak for the Tigers.

Saturday the Tigers traveled to Philips Arena to face Pacelli (2-3) out of Columbus. The Vikings hit a shot at the buzzer to get a 52-50 win.

A good crowd witnessed a great game against White County last Tuesday. The Tigers never trailed in the ball game and came away with the 18-point victory.

Sophomore Jacob Evans had a big game for the Tigers, with 12 points, all of them 3-point shots.

“Jacob had an excellent game,” remarked Burgess.

Evans finished the game with a double-double, as he also pulled down 13 rebounds.

“Our best game,” remarked Burgess. “We played extremely hard and smart. Our match-up gave them trouble and our run and jump allowed some easy baskets early and wore them down. We shot the ball good for the first time this year. When we shoot well we are difficult to guard with our type of offense.”

The Tigers jumped on the Warriors early and got out to a quick 17-4 lead after one quarter.

Dawson continued to pour on the scoring and extended its lead to 29-13 at the half.

White made a run in the third quarter and cut Dawson’s lead to 36-26 to end the quarter. The Tigers countered with an 8-0 run to start the final quarter pulling away for the victory.

Luke Crumley and Ashley Lowery both had 12 points to lead the offense for White.

Tiger scorers: Evans-12; Blythe Chester-11; Ben Daniels-9; Shelby Sanford-9; Ryan Morawsky-7; Seth Stowers-6; Stephen Johnson-3 and Stephen Scaife-2.

Creekview came to Dawsonville on Friday to face the Tigers.

The Grizzlies play in a tough Region 7-AAA and are very athletic with two possible Division-I players.

Creekview used its athletic ability to come out with a 73-64 win.

“We may have played our best game of the season,” remarked Burgess.

“They, Creekview, are experienced and will probably win that side of the region. I was pleased with how we handled their pressure. Defensively I thought we played pretty good,” he added.

Jacob Evans had another big night for the Tigers. Evans almost had his second double-double. He finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Point guard Stephen Scaife also came alive offensively, pouring in 16 points.

“Jacob and Stephen played really well for us tonight,” said Burgess. “I was disappointed we couldn’t pull this one out.”

It looked like Dawson would run away with this game early as the Tigers jumped out to an 8-0 lead.

The Grizzlies clawed their way back into the game, forging ahead 41-30 at the half.

The third quarter doomed the Tigers, as Creekview continued to apply pressure to get the win.

Tiger scorers: Evans-19; Scaife-16; Shelby Sanford-10; Blythe Chester-9; Ryan Morawsky-7; Stephen Johnson-1 and Mark Dodd-2.

The team traveled to downtown Atlanta Saturday afternoon for a game against Pacelli High School, out of Columbus.

Dawson got to do what every young boy dreams of, by playing a game on the floor of the Atlanta Hawks.

“It was a great environment to play in,” said Burgess. “We had a big crowd and then our kids got to see the Hawks win over the Cleveland Cavaliers later on.”

Pacelli came away with a 52-50 win, after hitting a shot with 2.4 seconds remaining from NBA 3-point distance to take the win.

Evans, once again, was the leading scorer for Dawson County. He scored 18 points, unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the Tigers.

Burgess remarked about his team’s performance, “We were not as aggressive as we normally are. We have got to make the easy stuff around the baskets. Our older kids have also got to step up for us and be more active. We should have won this game.

“Ryan (Morawsky) has been good shooting the ball and he is playing great defense for us,” Burgess added.

Tiger scorers: Evans-18; Morawsky-11; Scaife-11; Sanford-6 and Chester-4.

The team will have a few days off from play before hosting Region 8-AA foe North Oconee Friday.

Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, the team will travel to Sonoraville for an early afternoon game. The game should begin around 5:30 p.m.

“We will take a few days off to regroup and get ready for North Oconee on Friday,” Burgess said.
