ASK THE EXPERTS

Booths available for weekend yard sale

POSTED: April 11, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Editor's note: In the weeks leading up to Relay for Life, Dawson Community News will feature stories of hope, survivorship and fundraising events intended to increase cancer awareness in the community. The series will also include articles on prevention, early detection and treatment options.

Booth space is available for a community yard sale this weekend at Rock Creek Park.

The yard sale will be set up in the large parking lot beside the playground. In the event of rain, the event will be moved inside the gymnasium.

Proceeds from booth rentals, $10 for one table or $20 for two, will benefit the park's Relay for Life team.

Team Captain Kris Rowan said dozens of T-ball, baseball and soccer games are scheduled at the park Saturday creating "lots of potential yard sale customers."

The team has held several events, including a moonlit 5K run and softball tournament, in recent weeks to raise funds for Relay for Life. They also have a carwash planned from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the park.

Rowan said each member of the park and rec team has been affected by cancer and they wanted to give toward finding a cure.

"Just about every one of us on the team has lost a family member to cancer," Rowan said.

Relay for Life is an overnight event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society. Dawson County's celebration is May 18 at Veterans Memorial Park.

In addition to more than 30 booths offering food and fun for the entire family, Relay for Life teams make laps around the track throughout the night to show their support and celebrate survivorship while raising money for cancer research and programs.

Organizers hope this year to raise $90,000 locally.

For more information or to register a team, call Suzanne Hendricks at (770) 297-1176, Ext. 29062.
