Girls earn region title

No. 4 Lady Tigers outlast No. 6 Panthers

POSTED: April 3, 2012 4:53 p.m.

The Dawson County girls' soccer team captured the Region 8 sub-region championship March 27 with a 1-0 win over Union County.

Both teams entered the contest with a state ranking, the Lady Panthers are No. 6 and Dawson County is No. 4 in AA.

Dawson County scored the only goal of the game with 1:33 gone from the clock.

Brooke Duffy found the back of the net after a great pass from McKay Shively. The score was Duffy's seventh of the season and sixth goal in the last seven games.

"Brooke is so fast up top. It has really helped us with her being able to use her speed up top," said head coach Jed Lacey.

It was all the scoring Dawson needed. The Lady Tigers defense shut down Union for the next 48 minutes.

"What a win," Lacey said. "We accomplished our first goal tonight, win the sub region."

The Lady Tigers broke the school single season record with their 10th win of the season.

"We new this was going to be a tough game, playing a great team at their place. It is so hard to win up there. We just put our hard hats on and went to work," he said.

The Lady Panthers play on a synthetic turf. The unusual surface didn't seem to faze the Lady Tigers.

It was a very physical game as both teams committed some hard fouls.

"I was really impressed with Allie Costley tonight with her hustle and hard work. When you have a tall outside mid as physical as Allie is and with her speed, you can control the outside of the pitch," Lacey said.

The Lady Tigers are currently 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the region.

The team will play at 5 p.m. April 11 at home against Pickens County High School.

The team will travel to Banks County on April 13 for the last regular season game before the playoffs begin.
