Boys claim second in subregion

Defeat Union for first time in four years

POSTED: April 3, 2012 4:52 p.m.

The Dawson County High School varsity boys' soccer team accomplished a feat that hasn't happened in four years. The Tigers picked up a huge win over Union County, in Blairsville, 2-1. With the victory Dawson County captured second place in the subregion.
With the second place finish, Dawson County is guaranteed home field advantage during the first two rounds of the region tournament.

Jose Miranda, junior, put Dawson on the scoreboard first with a goal off an assist from Brandon Lund only 5 minutes into the game.

The Tigers played great defense and held the 1-goal advantage at halftime.

Union County tied the score on a corner kick early in the second half.

Miranda answered with a game-winning goal, his second score of the game, with just 11 minutes remaining off a free kick.

As the final buzzer sounded the Tigers celebrated.

"The term monkey off your back is perfect to describe this game we just played. Personally, and as a team, for the past four years we have never beat Union County. We have played Union in so many big games with region seeding on the line and we came up short every single time," said head coach Jed Lacey.

Lacey said several of his players did outstanding jobs.

"Goalkeeper Brooks Fulford did a great job in goal tonight and Jose Miranda came up with two big goals that won the game for us. Jose is such a great player. Jose can shoot, pass and play defense with anyone in the state," Lacey said.

The Tigers now stand at 7-5 overall and 3-1 in subregion play.

Dawson will play at 7 p.m. April 11 at home against Pickens County High School.

The game will be Senior Night for the Tigers.
