Fundraiser benefits cause

POSTED: April 4, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Tickets are now on sale for a barbecue chicken fundraiser next week at Julia's Neighborhood Deli.

Sponsored by SunTrust Bank and the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, proceeds from the April 10 dinner will benefit Relay for Life, an overnight event in May that celebrates survivorship, while raising money for cancer research and programs.

Nicole Stewart works at the bank and is also a member of the chamber's ambassador group.

"We partnered together to reach more people in the community," she said.

SunTrust Dawsonville and the Chamber Ambassadors have a combined goal this year of $5,000.

"Our hope is that we exceed this goal. We know we can achieve this with the help of our community," Stewart said.

The two Relay for Life teams also partnered with Julie Cody, owner of Julia's Neighborhood Deli, where the event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. April 10.

Plates are $8 each and include barbecue chicken, Texas toast, baked beans and a dessert. Meals are for pick up only.

"Julia is always looking to be involved in the community. She was so happy to help when we reached out to her," Stewart said.

The event is among several planned throughout the community leading up to Dawson County Relay for Life May 18-19 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Currently, there are more than two dozen local teams made up of 443 members registered to participate with a combined goal to collect more than $90,000 in Dawson County alone.

Stewart said the goal is to come together as a community and help find a cure for the disease.

"We are determined to fight to end cancer," she said.
