Hearings set on alcohol ordinance

POSTED: April 4, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Hearings have been set to gauge public opinion on amending the county's alcohol ordinance, though commissioners don't expect much conflict.

Voters approved a measure March 6 that allows the sale of package alcohol at stores on Sunday in unincorporated Dawson County by a 63 percent to 37 percent margin. Sunday drink sales passed by a similar margin, about 64 percent to 36 percent.

The county's ordinance currently only allows beer and wine to be sold in restaurants after 12:30 p.m. on Sundays.

"The specifics of the amendments to the ordinance the commissioners are considering address only the hours of sales on Sunday," said County Attorney Joey Homans.

County commissioners decided to hold off on updating the ordinance until after the measures were approved by voters.

The first of two hearings will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the commissioner's meeting room at the new Dawson County Government Center. The required second hearing is April 19, at which time the board could vote to change the ordinance.

If the changes are approved, the first day for Sunday package sales at stores and the sale of distilled spirits in restaurants could be as early as April 22, Homans said.

Dawsonville voters approved Sunday sales in November.
