Girls ranked No. 4 in Class AA

POSTED: March 28, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Rankings are out and the Dawson County girls' soccer team has a lofty No. 4-ranking in Class AA.

The ranking is an improvement over the team's No. 7 ranking from a week ago.

Dawson County currently has an overall record of 9-2.

The Lady Tigers played Union County on March 27 for the sub-region championship. The Lady Panthers are currently ranked No. 6 with a 9-1 record. Scores were unavailable as of press time.

Head coach Jed Lacey's girls handled both of last week's opponents fairly easily.

The Lady Tigers traveled to Rabun County on March 21 and defeated the Lady Wildcats, 4-0.

First half goals by freshmen Taylor Bennett and McKay Shively put Dawson ahead with only 20 minutes gone from the clock.

Shively's goal, her 11th of the season, came off of an assist by Brooke Shively.

The Lady Tigers added two more goals in the first half. One by Brittany Duffy and the other off the foot of Jade Perry.

Perry's goal came off of an assist by Carissa Perez.

"It was great to get the second half of the season going after the trip to Jekyll [Island]. We have pretty much region games left and that is setting us up for our seeding in the region playoffs. I thought we came out and played a great first half and got a nice lead and just came out flat in the second," Lacey said.

Friday's game with visiting East Hall (2-7) was decided early on.

The Lady Tigers scored early and often to come away with a huge 9-0 win.

The Lady Tigers scored three goals in a span of 3 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Goals were made by Mckay Shively, Brooke Duffy, and Carissa Perez. Perry got an assist on the Duffy goal and Morgan Huber added an assist on the Perez goal.

Dawson scored twice more before halftime on goals from Perez and Duffy.

Duffy ended up with a hat trick for the game.

She has scored six goals on the season. It was her first hat trick of her high school career.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers recorded goals from Duffy, Perry, McKay Shively (her 13th goal this season) and Riley Cox.

McKay Shively is just one goal away from breaking the school record of 14 goals by an individual player in a season.

Getting assists were Perez, Brittany Duffy and Bennett.

Goalies Kenna Seitz and Anela Melton, freshman, broke the school record for shutouts in a season after recording nine so far on the season.

"We were hitting on all cylinders tonight. We really pushed the net and overwhelmed them right from the start. McKay Shively and Brooke Duffy did a great job up top keeping the pressure off the defense," Lacey said.

The Lady Tigers are only one win away from breaking the school record of nine wins in a season.
