Boys tennis team doing well

POSTED: March 27, 2012 4:50 p.m.

Tigers tennis coach Chris Lundy has his boys' team playing very well.

The Tigers played an exhibition match with Woody Gap on March 19, followed by the team's match up against Region 8A-AA foe Fannin County.

The Tigers defeated Fannin, 4-1.

"It was nice letting some of my guys that may not typically play get a chance to play," Lundy said of the exhibition match.

Max Muldoon played a singles match and came up just short against his opponent.

"Max is great. Right now he's in the mix as one of my starters in the third singles spot. Max has great form and patience, nothing is over his head, and as nice a kid as you'll meet," Lundy said.

Tigers Craig Butler and Dakota Wood played a doubles match, but also lost to the only doubles team from Woody Gap.

"Despite the losses, I'm glad these guys got a chance to play and I'm proud of them," Lundy said.

Tuesday's match, played at Rock Creek, was against an unbeaten Fannin County team.

"I told the guys that they (Fannin) were solid and it may have pushed them a bit," Lundy said.

Winning at number one singles was Spencer Roper, who beat Timothy O'Connor (6-4, 6-0).

Luke Branson won at number two singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rebel Austin Kuhr.

At number three singles, Riley Westbrook lost a hotly contested match to Brandon Minter 5-7, 2-6.

Both doubles teams were victorious.

Lane Venters and Jeremiah Freedlund defeated Jason Burnet and Caleb Owens, 6-3, 6-4.

At number two doubles, Grant Shope and Tyler Griggs won in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"I was really proud of their effort today," Lundy said. "We really have a shot for sure. A spot in the region tournament is looking better and better. I've said all along, that's been our goal."

The Tigers will finish a postponed match at North Forsyth on March 28.

The team will travel to Buford on March 29 for a match with the Wolves. Both start at 4 p.m.

Dawson will then be off for a couple of weeks for spring break.
