Following the death of Joe Lane Cox earlier this month, the Dawsonville City Council is preparing to appoint an acting mayor and call for a special election.

During a called work session March 15, the council discussed the mayoral vacancy and what steps to take toward filling it.

City Attorney Dana Miles advised the council it must appoint an acting mayor until a special election can be held.

"Right now, James Grogan is serving as mayor pro-tem," Miles said. "In accordance with your charter, on April 2 you will need to appoint an acting mayor."

According to council protocol, the person appointed as acting mayor does not give up his rights as a council member, meaning he can still vote.

Miles also reported that he had been in contact with the local board of elections and chairwoman Glenda Ferguson about potential dates for a special election. Early indications are it may coincide with the general primary July 31.

There are, however, concerns about crowds and confusion, as well as the separate ballot and equipment required for the special contest.

In addition to the general presidential primary voting, several contested county and state races will be on the ballot this summer.

The board of elections office plans to move forward with special election preparations after the council makes its decision.

The council's next meeting is set for 5 p.m. April 2 at city hall.
