Teen detains alleged burglar

Authorities are praising the efforts of a teenager who caught a burglary suspect at his family's Grizzle Road home Friday.

Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten said the 17-year-old arrived home from school to find the basement window open.

"[He] looked in and saw the suspect inside the house," Wooten said. "He then went inside the back door, confronted [the man] and made him walk around to the front of the house."

At that point, Wooten said, the resident "called his mom, who reported it to us, and held him until we arrived about three minutes later."

The suspect, 18-year-old Canaan Hunter Mills, has been charged with burglary. He is being held without bond at the Dawson County Jail.

According to Wooten, the teen resident was familiar with Mills, who lives in a nearby subdivision.

Mills had apparently entered the home through an open window with a plan to take money from the residence.

"When officers arrived on scene, he had about $2,000 worth of gold and jewelry in plastic Ziploc bags that he had gotten from the home," Wooten said.
