ASK THE EXPERTS

Girls team is ‘on a roll’

POSTED: March 6, 2012 4:52 p.m.

Head coach Jed Lacey's varsity girls soccer team is red hot.

The Lady Tigers trounced Lumpkin County, 7-0, last Tuesday at Tigers Stadium. The team is also state ranked, at No. 9 in Class AA, for the first time in program history.

With the win, the team moved to 4-1 for the season.

Dawson scored with just 11:37 seconds into the first half on a corner kick by Brittany Duffy that found the foot of Jade Perry.

Perry placed the ball perfectly by the Lumpkin goalie to give the Lady Tigers a quick 1-0 advantage.

Lacey's girls added two more goals late in the first half.

With 3:36 remaining before half Duffy scored on an assist from Taylor Bennett and just 2 minutes later, McKay Shively found the back of the net on a pass from Duffy that made the halftime score 3-0 in favor of the Lady Tigers.

The team didn't let up in the second half and scored four more goals. The second half goals were scored by: Riley Cox, on Duffy's third assist, Morgan Callas, Duffy and Shively.

Duffy has four goals in the last two games and three assists.

"We are on a roll right now. We are hitting on all cylinders. We still have a long ways to be where I want us to be, but I do like the direction we are going in. We are passing and making connections that are really nice. We are a physical team," Lacey said.

In five games this season, the team has given up only two goals. Both were recorded in the team's loss to Buford.

"The defense was great tonight, led by freshman Anela Melton who was in goal the first half and junior Kenna Seitz who was in goal the second half. The defense made up of Morgan Huber, Emily Stowers, Brooke Shively and Anna Hawkins is amazing.

"I am very proud of how the girls played tonight. We have not played Lumpkin in three years. All these girls know each other. There was a lot of personnel pride riding on this game," Lacey said.

The team played at home against Fannin County on Tuesday. Results were not available as of press time.
