The Tigers opened the 2012 baseball season with a convincing 8-1 win at Chestatee High School in Gainesville last week.
Dawson's Jeffrey Partington was impressive on the mound and gave up one hit in three innings of work on Feb. 21. He walked one batter and struck out three.
Also pitching for Dawson County were Logan Burt, 2 innings, Tyler Thurmond, 1 inning and Harley Pruitt, 1 inning.
Chestatee's only run was unearned in the sixth inning.
"Our pitchers threw well. We had 10 strikeouts and only gave up three walks. All the pitchers threw strikes and worked ahead in the count," said assistant coach Mark Ragsdale.
Head Coach Jimmy Pruett's team's offense was on fire. The Tigers picked up 11 hits and only struck out five times.
"We did a job of putting the ball in play and making things happen," Pruett said.
Logan Burt, Tyler Thurmond and Colton Chester led the Tigers attack by picking up two hits apiece. Burt had an RBI with 2 walks on 2 singles. Chester had a walk, a single and a double. Thurmond had two singles with a walk.
Also contributing on offense with hits were Trevor Pierce (2 RBIs), Hunter Wehunt (RBI), David Chester, and Scott Parker.
The Tigers put the game out of reach in the third inning after scoring 4 runs to take a 5-0 advantage.
Thurmond walked to lead off the inning. After two strikeouts, Gavin Wilson was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second base. Pruitt reached on an error by the Eagles shortstop.
Trevor Pierce delivered a big single that drove in Thurmond and Wilson.
Pruitt and Pierce also scored on two throwing errors by Chestatee.
"I thought Jeff Partington, Logan Burt, Tyler Thurmond and Harley Pruitt threw well. Getting ahead early in the game helped. We made two errors and we have to correct that. We have to make the routine plays to be successful," Pruett said.
On Saturday the Tigers played their first home game against Lumpkin County. The Indians put on a hitting display and defeated Dawson by a 14-4 score.
Dawson County is 1-1 on the season.
The Tigers next game will be at 5:55 p.m. March 6 in Jasper against Pickens High.
