The Lady Tigers won a game and lost a game last week in basketball action.

Head Coach Steve Sweat and his varsity Lady Tigers traveled to Tallulah Falls, last Tuesday, and came away with a convincing 49-13 victory.

Friday night Dawson hosted Gilmer County and lost 57-34 to the Lady Bobcats.

With a split for the week Dawson currently has a 2-2 record for the season.

Against the Lady Indians from Tallulah Falls, Dawson jumped out early and held Tallulah Falls scoreless in the first quarter, 7-0.

The Lady Tigers continued to poor on the offensive onslaught by extending their lead to 20-7 by halftime.

Dawson cleared its bench in the second half, getting all players in the game for some needed varsity experience.

After three periods of play, Dawson held a commanding 28-10 lead. The team extended its lead by more than 30-points in the final stanza.

Eleven different players scored for the Lady Tigers. Sophomore Kaitlyn Pain led the team in scoring with a career high 12 points. Guard Jessi Phillips poured in 8 points in the big win.

“Everybody got in some good minutes on the varsity level. We need as much experience as we can get because we are so young,” commented Sweat.

Lady Tiger scorers: Pain-12; Phillips-8; Walters-4; Hyde-4; Woody-4; M. Bennett-4; Wallace-4; Huber-2; C. Bennett-3; Parker-2; Hall-2.

The story was different for the Lady Tigers against Gilmer County on Friday night.

The Lady Bobcats, who reached the first round of the state playoffs last year in AAA, got out to a hot start and led 18-7 before a big crowd at the Ford E. Phillips Center.

Senior Lady Bobcat point guard Kylie Smith had a big night offensively.

Smith penetrated through the Dawson defense for 20 points in the game, to lead all scorers.

Teammate Sarah Jones hit some huge shots from downtown to tally 13 points for Gilmer.

Gilmer extended its lead to 15-points by halftime, 31-16.

Lady Tiger guards, Morgan Bennett and Jessi Phillips tried to keep Dawson in the game with their shooting. Bennett finished with 10 points for the contest, while Phillips was the leading Dawson County scorer with 11 points.

Gilmer County Head Coach Herb Horton and his team poured on the defensive pressure to begin the second half.

The third quarter was the deciding factor, as Gilmer outscored the Lady Tigers 20-7. It was more than the Lady Tigers could handle, as the team trailed 51-23 after three quarters.

Both teams got some much-needed playing time for their bench players in the final quarter.

The Lady Tigers finally got some offense in the form of freshman Kimberly Wallace, 6 points, and Judith Hall with 5 points.

Coach Sweat commented about Gilmer, “They are a senior-laden team. Their experience showed, but I thought our girls still played really hard,” Sweat said about his team’s efforts against Gilmer County.

The Lady Tigers will host Creekview this Friday night before playing a game in Philips Arena on Saturday against Pacelli High School from Columbus.

Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday’s tip-off is scheduled for 1:15 p.m.

Lady Tiger Scorers:  Phillips-11; M. Bennett-10; Wallace-6; Hall-5; Daniel-2.
