Lace up your sneakers and stretch out your legs to show "Country Folks Can Survive" next weekend in Dawsonville.

Don't Stop Believing, a local 22-member Relay for Life team, will hold a 5K run and walk March 10 at Rock Creek Park. Proceeds will go toward the group's $4,000 fundraising goal, their contribution to the American Cancer Society.

"Cancer has touched each member of our team in some profound way," said team leader Kristie Bearden. "Each team member has a personal story and history with cancer, but we all have one common goal: To help fight cancer."

Sponsoring a 5K run and walk was a perfect fit for the group.

"Our team has made a commitment to celebrate those that are battling cancer, remember those that have lost and help fight against this horrible disease. With every step we take, we are helping the American Cancer Society save lives," Bearden said.

Registration is available at active.com or beginning at 7 a.m. the day of the event.

The race starts at 8 a.m. and awards will be given to the top three finishers in each group.
"Members of our team are looking for ways we can give back to our community, fight the disease and celebrate the victories," Bearden said.

An overnight event, Relay for Life will be held May 18 to celebrate survivorship while raising money for cancer research and programs. Teams set up booths that offer fun for the entire family and take turns walking or running laps around the track throughout the night.

"It is life-changing. Relay for Life is family-friendly entertainment with a touching purpose. We are all very proud to be involved with it," Bearden said.
