Presidential primary voting open

POSTED: February 22, 2012 4:00 a.m.

For the first time, Dawson County voters will be able to cast ballots for an election on a Saturday.

Thanks to a new state law, polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Dawson County Board of Elections office, 96 Academy Ave.

The offering is part of early voting, which began last week, for Georgia's March 6 presidential preference primary.

A referendum on Sunday package alcohol sales in Dawson County is also on the March 6 ballot.

The ballot will also ask voters whether restaurants in unincorporated areas of the county should be able to serve distilled spirits on Sunday.

Early and advanced voting will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday through March 2.

There will be no voting on March 5, ahead of Election Day.

Registered voters must present a form of photo identification before voting. Those include: a Georgia driver's license; valid state or federal government-issued photo ID; U.S. passport; U.S. military photo ID; tribal photo ID; or an employee photo ID from any federal, state or local government.

The Dawson County Web site advises voters who have questions to visit www.sos.ga.gov/mvp to find polling places, maps and more information.

For more information, call the elections' office at (706) 344-3640.
