Whether it’s a resident or one of their own in need, Dawson County Sheriff’s deputies will do whatever they can to make a difference.

That includes playing two bruising games of basketball without a break.

Sheriff’s deputies returned to Dawson County on Saturday sore but upbeat following a charity basketball tournament at Forsyth Central High School.

They also came home with a sizable donation for Mickey Gilbertson, an eight-year veteran of the department who is suffering from kidney failure and awaiting a kidney transplant.

A donor has been found, but the Gilbertsons need help to cover the costs.

Cheering from the sideline, the officer watched calmly as his colleagues battled it out first against the Dawson County Emergency Services squad and later against a team from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Even with the reality that they were all working toward the same goal, the games were competitive.

Immediately after the opening round victory, the sheriff’s office took to the court against Forsyth County’s law enforcement team in the championship game.

Dawson County law enforcement then defeated Dawson County emergency services in the second game of the tournament.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s team won the tournament, but according to Dawson County Deputy Chief of Emergency Services Tim Satterfield the scores were irrelevant.

“It doesn’t matter who won the games,” Satterfield said. “We did it for Mickey, and we’re honored. We’re supposed to help out each other.”
