A woman recently released from prison to care for her elderly father was arrested over the weekend after Dawson County Sheriff's deputies reportedly saw her physically abusing the man.

Martha Ann Horvat, 45, is being held at the Dawson County jail without bond, authorities said.

She faces more than a dozen charges ranging from disorderly conduct and simple battery against a person older than 65 to obstruction of officers and reckless conduct.

"We believe alcohol was a factor," said Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten. "Officers had been called out to the building earlier that night already for a similar situation."

The incident in question happened about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Wooten said reports of a woman screaming in nearby woods drew deputies to an apartment complex on Hwy. 9 in downtown Dawsonville.

After speaking with Horvat about the disturbance, deputies were leaving the apartment when they say she pulled her father from a wheelchair by his feet and slam-med him onto the bed.

"They could see her through the front win-dow," Wooten said.

Once at the jail, additional charges were taken against Horvat for violence against deputies. She was also charged with a parole violation.

According to the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, Horvat was released on parole Jan. 4 after serving 16 months of a 10-year sentence for theft by receiving stolen property in Richmond County in eastern Georgia.

"We heard she was released to take care of her 79-year-old father," Wooten said. "We don't believe he sustained any injuries in the attack."
