Equipment vandalized on construction site

POSTED: February 1, 2012 4:00 a.m.

The investigation is continuing into the vandalism of several pieces of heavy equipment last week on the site of Lanier Technical College's new campus near downtown Dawsonville.

Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten said the property damage has been estimated at about $11,000.

The damage, which left some equipment inoperable, was reported Friday morning when construction workers arrived on the site, which is off Tiger Circle.

"We believe it happened the night before around 9:30 p.m.," Wooten said. "We have video footage from a nearby location."

Investigators are following leads in the case, but no arrests have been made.

Authorities also responded to several incidents over the weekend.

Billy Thurmond, director of Dawson County Emergency Services, said fire charred a singlewide mobile home on Old Mill Creek Road about noon Sunday.

"There was no power to the home, so the fire remains under investigation," he said.

No one was injured fighting the blaze.

A Dawsonville man was hospitalized Saturday night following a wreck on Afton Road in northwestern Dawson County.

Thurmond said Stanley Allen, 56, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries.

A Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman said Allen lost control in a curve on Afton before leaving the road and striking a tree.

He was charged with driving under the influence, improper lane change, seatbelt violation and tire requirements.

Troopers also handled a three-vehicle wreck that disrupted traffic about 3 p.m. Monday at Ga. 400 and Dawson Forest Road.

Trooper Darius Goss said the driver of a pickup truck traveling north on Ga. 400 ran a red light and struck a second truck, which then collided with a sport utility vehicle.

The female driver of the second truck was taken by ambulance to Northside Hospital-Forsyth with what emergency workers described as non-life threatening injuries.

The intersection was closed for a while as authorities cleared the wreckage.
