Board moves meetings to government center

POSTED: February 1, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Commissioners will have their first meeting in the new Dawson County Government Center tomorrow.

The 6 p.m. voting session will be held in the assembly room on the second floor.

Previously held in the G.L. Pete Gilleland Chambers at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex, all work sessions and voting sessions will now be held at the new venue.

"We appreciate the city's hospitality the last few years," said County Manager Kevin Tanner.

Commission Chair Mike Berg said the board is excited to hold its meetings in the new center.

"In the seven plus years I have been in office, this is the first time our citizens have a meeting place of their own," he said.

The assembly room features state-of-the-art audio visual capabilities and seating for nearly 200.

County administration, planning and zoning, public works and finance are also located on the second floor, while magistrate court and the district attorney's office are on the third floor. Probate and Superior courts are on the fourth floor.

Court rooms are on the third and fourth floors.

The clerk of courts office is located on the first floor, along with the tax commissioner and tax assessor's offices.

Judges will begin holding court at the new location the week of Feb. 6.

Those entering the government center are subject to search by deputies and must pass through a screening station. Certain items, such as guns, knives, glass or anything that could be used as a weapon are prohibited in the center.

In the event a prohibited item is brought to the center, the screening officer will either take possession of the item while the owners conduct their business or allow them to return the item to their vehicles.
