A Lumpkin County man remains in jail a week after he was charged with attempting to run over the officers who were pursuing him on an arrest warrant.

Christopher Kevin Jones, 25, is being held at the Dawson County Law Enforcement Center without bond in connection with the Dec. 27 altercation that began in the parking lot of Ingles and ended after a high speed chase on Ga. 400.

In addition to aggravated assault on an officer and obstruction of officer charges, Jones also faces a parole violation, as well as numerous traffic counts.

He also was charged with first-degree cruelty to children.

According to Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle, two kids were with Jones during the incident.

"The oldest child watched as he was arrested," Carlisle said.

Representatives with the Department of Family and Children Services were called to the scene, but authorities said the children were turned over to family members.

Carlisle said the incident began when investigators spotted Jones, who had a probation violation warrant against him in Lumpkin, at the shopping center parking lot.

According to the arrest warrant, Jones accelerated toward the investigators after they identified themselves, "causing them to have to move out of the [vehicle's] path."

He then fled east along Hwy. 53 before going south on Ga. 400. From Ga. 400, he reportedly cut across incoming traffic and into the Walmart shopping center.

Authorities said Jones' vehicle hopped the curb at the roundabout before he got out and attempted to run off. Deputies wrestled him to the ground.

An investigator was later treated for injuries sustained in the scuffle.
