Anna Madge McLendon Mayer

Anna Madge McLendon Mayer, 87, of McComb, Miss., died Sept. 16, 2011.

She was born May 19, 1924 in Greenville, S.C.

She was the daughter of J. Raymond McLendon Sr. and Winnie Altman McLendon.

She was a homemaker and registered nurse. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church since 1949 and was a longtime member of the Nautilus Club, Parnassas Club, Four Seasons Club, Supper Club, Dance Club and founder of the 39'ers Senior group at Centenary and was a member of the Oliver Emmerich Sunday School class.

Mrs. Mayer was honored in 1959 as "Mother of the Year."

Mrs. Mayer graduated from the Greenville, S.C. public schools, Furman University in Greenville and Duke University School of Nursing where, she received her nursing degree in 1947 and where she met Dr. William T. Mayer, whom she married in 1947.

Mrs. Mayer's working career included the Greenville, S.C. News-Piedmont from 1942-43, staff nurse at Harper Hospital and Woman's Hospital in Detroit, Mich. And staff nurse at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb from 1969-1977. She was employed the first day of the hospital's opening.

Her parents; her husband, Dr. William T. Mayer; and a brother, J. Raymond McLendon Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include her four sons and daughters-in-law, William H. and Marlene Mayer of McComb and Petoskey, Miss., Lt. Col. Henry R. and Coni Mayer of Decatur, Ind., John M. and Marla Mayer of Winter Park., Fla. and James C. and Rose Mayer of Mandeville, La.; one daughter and son-in-law, Melinda Mayer Wallace and Mark of Summit, Miss.; seven grandsons, Mac Mayer, Charlie Mayer, Michael Mayer, Matthew Mayer, Clayton Mayer, David Wallace and Justin McCullough; six granddaughters, Rebecca Mayer, Anna Rachel Mayer, Maugham "Maggie" Everett Tyner and husband, Dayne, Lauren Elizabeth Mayer, Maryann Wallace Davis and husband, Ryan Leighton Davis and Laura Kathryn Wallace; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 21 at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Cumbest and Connie Felter officiating. Interment will follow in Pike Memorial Gardens. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be David Penton, Spike Simmons, Mark Chinn, members of the Oliver Emmerich Sunday School class, the Supper Club and members of other clubs she was a member of.
