Eagles struggle to score

POSTED: September 6, 2011 5:22 p.m.

Offensively the Riverview Middle School Eagles could not muster up any scoring against Jasper Middle School last week.

The Eagles didn't pick up a first down until 3:15 of the second quarter as the team was shutout by the Dragons 40-0.

With the loss Riverview fell to 0-2 for the season.

"We had way too many missed tackles, assignments and special teams errors," said head coach Mark Thomason.

The Dragons returned two punts for touchdowns and had a third one called back on a penalty.

Riverview also had a punt blocked that led to another Jasper touchdown.

Jasper opened the game with a 65-yard scoring drive capped off by a 36-yard run to take a quick 6-0 lead. The 2-point conversion was no good.

The Eagles could not move the ball on its first possession and had to punt to Jasper.

The Jasper punt returner took the punt and sprinted untouched down the right sideline for a 32-yard touchdown. This time the 2-point conversion was successful and gave Jasper a 14-0 lead with 2:58 still to play in the first quarter.

The Dragons added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. One touchdown was on another punt return and the other was after a punt block.

Riverview mounted a 62-yard drive just before halftime. Behind strong running by halfbacks Mateo Fritz and Alan Sanchez, along with a tight end pass play to Harrison Adams, Riverview moved the ball down to the Jasper 3-yard line before time ran out for halftime.

"Brenden Capps caused a fumble and recovered it. I thought Jake Booth did a good job on defense with several tackles. Alan Sanchez led us in rushing. Alan made several nice runs and ran with a lot of heart," Thomason said.

Jasper scored twice more in the second half to come away with the big win.

The Dragons moved to 2-0 with the victory.

Riverview will be at home Thursday against Clear Creek. The Bobcats defeated Dawson County Middle 34-8 last week.

Kickoff will be at 5 p.m.
