A Dawsonville couple who authorities say are responsible for a burglary last week were arrested after tips from nearby residents.

"This is just a real good case of a good neighborhood watch," said Dawson County Sheriff’s Cpl. Jimmi Smith.

Smith said deputies were called to Jenkins Road on the night of Aug. 4 after a neighbor reported seeing two young people attempt to break into a home.

"They had cased out several other houses in the area and had also broke out a window in the house next door, but we think they left when they heard someone upstairs," Smith said.

"We think they picked this [house] because no one was at home at the time."

Darrin Anthony Legano, 18, and Molly Debbiesue Hoynes, 23, were each charged with burglary, theft by taking and second degree criminal damage to property, according to jail records. The charges are felonies.

Both suspects are being held without bond at the Dawson County Law Enforcement Center.

Legano, who ran off when deputies arrived about 8 p.m., was caught a couple hours later when Smith returned to the area in an unmarked car and saw him walking in the road.

"I went back out there because a neighbor, possibly the same neighbor that called us earlier and reported the initial break-in, called and said he thought he knew where the guy we were looking for was," Smith said.

"Again, this was a good example of neighbors watching out for each other."

Lt. Tony Wooten said most of the items taken in the burglary, including prescription pain pills and several small household items, were recovered when Hoynes was arrested.

"There are two rings that are still missing, and the family really wants them back," Wooten said.
