Summer passing camps have come and gone for the Riverview Middle School Eagle football team.

The team completed its final passing league July 26 at White County Middle School in Cleveland.

On a hot and humid day, the Eagles passed and defended against bigger schools in White County and football powerhouse Stephens County.

"I felt like our guys have improved tremendously from day one," said head coach Mark Thomason. "We now have an idea who catches the ball well and which players need a little help."

Against White County, the Eagles moved up and down the field. It was the second time Riverview had passed against White County over the summer.

"I really felt like our guys came to play and did well against White County. Alan Sanchez had several nice catches, as well as Mateo Fritz and Cole Hoppal," Thomason said.

"Defensively Tyler Butler made a couple of nice picks and Harrison Adams did well at LB (linebacker)," he added.

Stephens County was athletic and big. The Eagles had a difficult time coping with the speed of the middle school Rebel team.

"They (Stephens County) really gave us some stiff competition. Our guys didn't back down, but I'm glad they are not in our league. Against them Chaz Slaton and Harrison Adams made some nice catches," Thomason said.

On defense the Eagles did their best but missed several assignments against a talented Stephens offense.

"I thought Mateo Fritz and Cole Hoppal played well on defense against Stephens," he said.

All the summer workouts and passing leagues have ended.

Riverview coaches are convinced all the extra work and time will pay off this season.

Regular season practice began Aug. 1 in preparation for the season-opening scrimmage Aug. 18 at Fannin County.

The first regular season game for Riverview will be against cross-county rival Dawson County Middle School at 5 p.m. Aug. 25 at Riverview Middle School.
