Lions Club International hosts a Peace Poster Contest each year, which begins with a local club sponsorship.

The Dawsonville Lions Club sponsors the John Fromia Peace Poster Contest each year, in honor of former Lions Club member John Fromia, who promoted art appreciation in Dawson County.

This year’s theme was, “Peace Begins With Me.”

The winning poster of the local competition is sent on to a district competition and, if selected, can be sent on to state, national and even an international competition.

One poster is chosen as the International Grand Prize Winner and that person receives a trip to the award ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations in New York City.

At that ceremony, the winner will receive a cash award of $2,500 and an engraved plaque. Two family members (one being the winner’s parent or legal guardian) will accompany the winner to the award ceremony.

Twenty five merit award winners are selected and each of those receives an additional $500 and a certificate of achievement.

This year’s local winners were India Pagels, third place, Jade Perry, second place and Hannah Faille, first place.

The local club awarded prizes to the top three winners. The first place winner received $150 and her poster will be sent on to the district competition, the second place winner received $125 and third place received $75.

This contest is open to all Dawson County youth who will be 11, 12 or 13 years old as of Nov. 15 of each year.

For more information, call Lynn Sweatte at Dawson County Middle School at (706) 216-5801, Ext. 3068.
