Golf tournament raises funds

POSTED: June 29, 2011 4:00 a.m.

On June 6 the Georgia Mountain Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, a group of active, retired and former military officers, sponsored a golf tournament at Lake Lanier Islands for Wounded Warriors (wounded service members of any war or conflict) to raise funds for Homes for Troops, Fisher House and Wounded Warrior Transition and related programs.

The chapter will donate over $30,000 to those programs.

We extend our thanks to the residents of Dawson County and to the many sponsors and donors that made this event possible. Thirty six wounded warriors from Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars were in the mix each playing in a foursome at no cost to the warrior. Fifteen of the warriors brought their families and stayed in the lodge at no cost and with free admission to the island's playgrounds.

Why golf? The military has discovered that golf is one of the best means of developing rehabilitation for wounded service members. It strengthens muscle groups, improves coordination and brings about renewed confidence in the individual. We, the chapter, are proud to be part of that effort.

We extend our thanks to the members who live here, the residents who supported us with donations and sponsorships, the many businesses who gave so generously such as United Community Bank, Community and Southern Bank, My Mercedes and Bimmer Place, Veterans Affairs Council of the Chamber of Commerce, and to Ryan's Steak House, to mention only a few, and the Lake Lanier Islands Lodge and Legacy Golf Course for their generous support. Special recognition goes to the volunteers from Life Care Centers of America who gave of their time to assist with the tournament.

We look forward to once again honoring our veterans in 2012.
