The Riverview Middle School Eagle football team completed spring practice with a scrimmage game last week.

The game, originally scheduled for May 13, was played on May 16, due to the threat of inclement weather.

Head Coach Mark Thomason taught around 60 players fundamentals and basic formations during the two-week practice sessions.

"We put in our basic offense and defense," Thomason said. "We spent a great deal of time working on the basics of tackling and blocking."

Thomason praised several of his players during spring training.

"There were several seventh graders that stepped up and had good springs. I was really impressed with the play of fullback Phillip Pinion, offensive linemen Micah Dean and Casey Passmore, running back Blake Wood and quarterback Hunter Ramey," he said.

Eighth graders Ty Anglin, wide receiver, Jake Booth, linebacker, Alan Sanchez and Mateo Fritz, running backs, Harrison Adams, tight end, Trey Maciolek, Brenden Capps, Justin Cantrell, linemen, and quarterback Tyler Bulter had good springs, according to Thomason.

In the spring game, the white team came out on top by a 14-6 score over the royal team.

The white team was led by running back, Alan Sanchez, quarterback, Tyler Butler, and lineman, Brenden Capps.

Sanchez put the white team on the board first with a 20-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was good and the white team led 8-0.

The royal team answered with a 61-yard touchdown run by Mateo Fritz. Fritz made a great cut behind the block of offensive lineman Justin Cantrell to break free for the long run.

The 2-point conversion by the royal team was no good, making the score 8-6 white team.

The score remained at 8-6 when the halftime buzzer sounded.

Thomason's white team got the only score in the second half.

Quarterback Tyler Butler found running back Alan Sanchez for a 33-yard touchdown pass.

The 2-point conversion was not successful. White team led 14-6.

Both defenses were stingy for the rest of the half. Neither offense crossed the goal line, which made the final 14-6.

Quarterback Tyler Butler connected on 7 of 10 passes with a touchdown and an interception for the game.

"I thought all three running backs had a good game," Thomason said. "Mateo Fritz had a nice run for a touchdown. Alan Sanchez ran hard and scored. I also thought Chaz Slaton had a few nice runs."

Thomason was also pleased with the play of his offensive and defensive lines.

"The defensive and offensive lines played pretty well. I thought Brenden Capps and Justin Cantrell both had a great spring game. Tight end Harrison Adams, and lineman Trey Maciolek had a good game," he said.

"There are several things we know we must improve on before next year, but it really gives us as coaches a chance to see where we are strong and where we are hurting," Thomason added.
