Walters qualifies for state

The Dawson County High School girls’ track team is in fourth place after day one at the Region 8-AA track meet at East Jackson High School.

 

The Lady Tigers, coached by Arron Haynes, have scored 32 team points.

 

Leading the meet is North Oconee with 60 points, followed by second place Hart County with 51 points. Jefferson is in third place with 47.5 total points.

 

Saturday’s event consisted mainly of finals for the field events and one final in the 1,600-meters.

 

Lady Tiger Madalyn Walters qualified for the state meet with a time of 5:25.11 and a second place finish in the 1,600-meter race. Walters finished just behind Olivia Pigg of North Oconee who ran 5:21.21 to win the event. Walters earned eight team points for the Lady Tigers.

 

Rachael Gloeckner also ran the 1,600-meter for Dawson County finishing in seventh-place with a time of 6:08.36. Gloeckner picked up one team point.          

 

In preliminary running events on Saturday, the Lady Tigers had several impressive performances.

 

Qualifying for the finals on Monday were Kimberly Wallace in the 100-meters with a time of 13.27, Gracie Hovan in the 200-meters with a time of 28.38, and the 4 x 400 relay team of Reese Bryant, Madalyn Walters, Gracie Hovan and Kimberly Wallace. The team crossed the finish line with a time of 4:24.23.

 

If any of these teams can finish as the winner or runner-up they will qualify for the state meet in Albany next week.

 

The results of Monday’s meet were not available at press time.

 

Dawson County had a strong performance in most of the field events.

 

In the discus throw, Hayden Wilson finished fourth with a throw of 100’5.”

 

Wilson picked up six team points for Dawson County High School.

 

Kristy Martin placed eighth with a toss of 89’3,” and earned one point for her Dawson County teammates.

 

Gracie Hovan jumped 33’11.25” to finish in third place in the triple jump.

 

Wallace came in fifth-place in the event with a jump of 32’3.5”.

 

Hovan scored six points, while Wallace brought in four points for the event.

 

In the long jump, Wallace finished in fifth-place with a leap of 15’6.5” and four team points.

 

Lady Tiger Leslie Barnett picked up one point with an eighth-place finish in the high jump. Barnett jumped 4’8” in the event.
