Soccer club presents plans

Parents question fees, policies

POSTED: May 4, 2011 4:00 a.m.

A town hall meeting Friday night introduced the new club selected to oversee Dawson County Park and Recreation’s soccer program this fall.

About two dozen parents attended the program presented by officials with United Futbol Academy, a Forsyth County-based soccer club that plans to expand into Dawson County later this year.

Don Schultz, executive director of operations, said the town hall meeting was intended to showcase the program and dispel any rumors that circulated regarding the academy.

The change to United Futbol Academy followed a three-year partnership with Dawson County United Soccer Club that ended after failed negotiations over late payments for field usage, delays in scheduling and a poor relationship with the school system, according to Park Director Lisa Henson.

“Being associated with United Futbol Academy gives your players a lot of opportunities,” Schultz said. “Our goal is to provide the best program for your kids.”

Schultz and a group of coaches outlined the new program and then fielded questions from attendees.

Much of the public comment portion of the meeting focused on the club’s policies and fees to play, which were also concerns voiced by parents when the park board announced in March that United Futbol Academy would be the county’s new soccer club.

Deo Moleka, executive director of development, has said fees will not increase through the 2013 season.

He said the group is looking forward to bringing its experience to Dawson County.

“It’s clear soccer is a big deal in Dawson County,” he said.

Schultz also said coaches would not prevent players from playing both park and rec and school soccer, which was another concern parents voiced Friday night.

“We don’t say they can’t do it,” he said.

A second town hall meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 13 at Rock Creek Park.
