The Riverview Middle School girls’ soccer team capped off an undefeated season with a 3-0 win over cross-county rival Dawson County Middle School March 31 at Riverview Stadium.

With the win, the Lady Eagles finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record and a Mountain League Championship trophy.

“The girls victory was a complete team effort, which is the only way you can win a championship. I knew that we had that game before it even started based on the girls pre-game talk with each other. They were all on the same page and had the will to win,” said Head Coach John Lundy.

Riverview surrendered only two goals all season. The only goal scored on the team during live play was in the playoffs to Pickens County Middle School. The other goal came off a penalty kick.

On offense, the Lady Eagles were dominant. The team scored 82 goals during the season.

The championship marks the second consecutive year that Riverview Middle School has won.

The Lady Eagles have a winning streak of 21 games straight.

According to principal and athletic director Bill Zadernak: “Riverview has more consecutive wins than any sports team in Dawson County School System history.”

The last loss recorded by the team was on March 31, 2009. The team lost to Dawson County Middle School 3-0 in the playoffs.

Last week, Taylor Bennett tallied the first goal for the Lady Eagles with 21:18 remaining in the first half.

Bennett launched a laser past the Dawson goalie from 10-yards out. It was the only goal allowed in the first half by a very tough Dawson County Middle School defense.

Lady Eagle Rachel Starling added a second goal off a corner kick, that bounced off her stomach, past the Lady Tiger goalie, with 18:10 to play. The score gave a 2-0 advantage to Riverview.

Bennett’s second goal slipped into the back off the net with 15:15 left in the game to put the contest out of reach.

Recording assists for Riverview were: Emily Queen, Isabella Elliot, Summer Sanders and McKay Shively.

Defensively the team was led by Tina Libao and Anna Hawkins in the shutout.

“This team has a lot to be proud of,” Lundy said.

Members of the championship team were: McKenzie Rhodes, Isabella Elliot, Summer Sanders, Rachel Starling, Eliza Sillesky, Samantha Keeny, Mikayla Perez, Taylor Grindstaff, McKay Shively, Tina Libao, Madison Callas, Taylor Bennett, Anna Hawkins, Emily Queen, Kelly Morris, Rosalee Gaddis, Laura Anne Branson and Reagan Millholland.

Team members of the runner-up Dawson County Middle School team were:  Meghan Picklesimer, Brittany Griggs, Lindsey Knotts, Sara Bywaletz, Dana Little, Summer Armstrong, Taylor Jones, Anela Melton, Jordan Moore, Maddie Contreras, Jordan Seppenfield, Sadie Hardesty, Emily Stapler, Ansley Costley, Katelyn Hardegree, Madison Adams, Tristan Melton, Jordan Thompson, Brittany Wadsworth and Coaches Donna Melton and Karen Spencer.
