A sixth-grade teacher at Dawson County Middle School will not be charged following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct with a female student.

Citing a lack of evidence, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office closed the case last week, said Capt. Tony Wooten.

According to Dawson County School Superintendent Keith Porter, the male teacher remained on paid leave as of Tuesday afternoon, more than a month after the allegations surfaced.

It could not be determined when, or if, the teacher would return.

According to Wooten, the parent of a sixth-grade student told authorities Feb. 24 that “a teacher at school had inappropriately touched her ... at the end of the day at school” on Feb. 23.

After the allegations surfaced, Porter said the system would “continue to monitor the investigation.”

He added that officials had contacted the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, a state government agency that certifies educational personnel.

The school system, however, did not file a formal complaint.

Because the case has been closed, Wooten said, it will not be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for further investigation.
