A Dawson County woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her longtime employer has been indicted by a Dawson County Grand Jury.

Stacy Mathews, 45, of Crane Road, faces nearly two dozen theft counts.

Her daughter, Jessica Mathews, 21, of Dawsonville, was also indicted in the case earlier this month.

Authorities say the elder Mathews took more than $107,000 from T.W. Phillips Grading, where she had worked as an administrative assistant for more than a decade.

Dawson County Sheriff’s Capt. Tony Wooten said company CEO Tracy Phillips reported the theft in mid-September after receiving notification of unpaid company taxes.

According to the indictment and arrest warrants, Stacy Matthews, an authorized signature for company accounts, used business funds to pay personal expenses, including credit card bills.

Wooten said Stacy Mathews also reportedly wrote checks from business accounts totaling $18,000 to her daughter, who was not employed with the grading company.

The thefts reportedly occurred between January 2006 and July 26, 2010.

Stacy Mathews was arrested in early October. Her daughter’s arrest followed 10 days later.

Wooten said Phillips and his wife, Lisa, considered Stacy Mathews an “entrusted employee that was like family.”

Court dates for the two suspects were not immediately available.
