Jimmy Pruett’s Dawson County High School varsity baseball team opened the season with two convincing wins last week.

Playing both teams at home, the Tigers defeated Chestatee, 10-0, and Riverside Military Academy, 8-3.

Josh Harper picked up the win for Dawson on Tuesday against Chestatee High School, out of Hall County. Harper went five strong innings, allowed only two hits and recorded six strikeouts.

Jeffrey Partington pitched the final inning in relief.

Kaleb Holbrook set the tone offensively for the Tigers. He blasted a two-run homer in the first inning. Holbrook finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Tigers Cody Harper and Josh Smith also had a good day at the plate. The pair picked up two hits apiece in the win.

The Tigers continued the hot bats against Riverside Military Academy on Thursday. Dawson scored runs in every inning to pick up the 8-3 win.

Dawson used three first inning walks and two Riverside errors to score 3 first inning runs to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Tyler Thurmond used an assortment of fastballs and off-speed pitches to keep Riverside batters at-bay.

Thurmond recorded the win with nine strikeouts.

The Tigers never looked back. The team scored two runs in the second and single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.

Dawson will travel to Habersham Central Wednesday before returning home against Union County nextTuesday. Both games will start at 5:30 p.m.
