A perfect season and a championship, that’s what the Dawson County Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team received over the weekend. The team finished the season with a 14-0 record and a 40-35 championship win over Clear Creek in the Mountain League tournament on Saturday.

“I’m so proud of our players,” said Head Coach Tina Brown. “We didn’t have our best game of the season, but we were still able to pull out a win.”

The Mountain League champs got off to a slow start against Clear Creek in front of a huge crowd at Gilmer County Middle School, which played host to this year’s tournament.

The Lady Tigers fell behind 10-5 in the opening quarter, it was the first time Dawson had trailed at the end of a quarter all season.

“We were not hitting our shots from the outside so we had to drive in and hit lay-ups,” Brown said.

The Lady Bobcats used a full-court, man-to-man press to disrupt Dawson. The Lady Tigers seemed flat-footed and nervous to begin the game.

Dawson regained its composure in the second quarter and outscored Clear Creek in the period, to take a 16-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Tigers poured it on in the third quarter behind the scoring of Karlie Bearden and Ansley Costley.

Bearden and Costley finished the game with 11 and 14 points respectively.

Dawson outscored Clear Creek 15-7 in the quarter to take a 31-22 lead.

Brown’s team withstood a frantic rally by the Lady Bobcats in the fourth quarter.

Clear Creek scored 13 points to Dawson’s 9 points, but the Lady Tigers had just enough to hang on.

When the final buzzer sounded the players and fans erupted with excitement.

“Our players stuck with it and didn’t give up. We were able to pull it out in the end. We had a great season,” Brown said.

Putting up points for the Lady Tigers were:  Haley Burgess with 5 points, Brittany Griggs added 5 points, Summer Vaughn and Peytan Porter contributed two points each.

Other members of this year’s championship team were: Emerald Moorer, Taylor Hammond and Haelye Lewis.
