JV boys 2-0 for the week

POSTED: February 1, 2011 4:30 p.m.

The Dawson County High School junior varsity boys basketball team picked up two wins last week. The Tigers defeated Banks County, 57-37, and East Hall, 51-25.

Coach Wes Greer’s team traveled to Homer to square off with Banks on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 11-7 lead and never looked back against the Leopards.

Twelve different players scored for the Tigers. The team was led by Jonathan Sanderson with 14 points. Jesse Gee and Lucas Pain each had 9 points. Also contributing offensively were: Cameron Chester and Jackson Putnam with 5 points apiece, Gunnar Armstrong with 4 points, Cameron Millholland, Jonah Martin, Logan Burt, Elijah Fitts and Steven Stanfill chipped in  2 points each and Mitchell Putnam scored one point.

Defense was the key factor in Friday’s win at East Hall. The Tigers held East Hall to only one second quarter point and 10 points total in the half to take a commanding 27-10 lead at halftime. Dawson coasted to a 26-point win.

“We had a good night shooting the ball,” Greer said. “We had a lot of easy looks after beating their press.”

Sanderson, once again, led all scorers with 14 points. Other Tigers scoring were: Gee-6 points, Millholland-3 points, Martin-2 points, Mitchell Putnam-4 points, Burt-8 points, Jackson Putnam-3 points, Scott Zadernak-2 points, Pain-3 points, Chester-4 points and Stanfill-2 points.

“It was a great win for a great bunch of guys,” Greer said.

The team will be back in action this Friday with a home game against Rabun County. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
