JV girls pick up a win

Fall to Union and East Hall, defeat Gilmer

POSTED: January 25, 2011 4:30 p.m.

The Dawson County High School junior varsity girls basketball team played three games last week. The Lady Tigers matched up with Gilmer County, Union County and East Hall.

The Lady Tigers picked up one win over Gilmer on Saturday, 36-29.

The team lost to Union on Friday afternoon 42-37 and East Hall on Wednesday by a 35-32 score.

The team is currently 4-4 overall on the season.

Head Coach Anne Hyams’ team led the entire game against Gilmer in Ellijay on Saturday.

Kacie Bearden led all scorers with 12 points for the Lady Tigers.

“Overall, I am proud of the effort the girls put forth throughout the game,” Hyams said.

Also scoring against the Lady Bobcats were: Whitney Glover-9 points, Hayden Wilson-6 points, Madison Shope-5 points, Hannah Moye-2 points, and Alison Honea-2 points.

Against Union on Friday, the Lady Tigers fought back from a 13-point third quarter deficit before dropping a 42-37 decision to the Lady Panthers.

Scoring for Dawson were: Madison Shope-11 points, Hayden Wilson-8 points, Kacie Bearden-8 points, Alison Honea-4 points, Whitney Glover-4 points and Brittany Phillips-2 points.

The Lady Tigers fell short to the East Hall Lady Vikings, 35-32, on Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead with Kacie Bearden nailing two three-pointers.

However, East Hall fought back in the second quarter to cut Dawson’s lead to 4 points, 18-14, at halftime.

The Lady Vikings continued to turn up the heat defensively and captured the lead, 25-22, at the end of three quarters of play.

The visiting Lady Vikings held on to take the 35-32 decision over Dawson County.

Sammie Smith led all Lady Tigers in offense with 8 points. Smith was followed by Bearden with 7 points, Hannah Moye had 6 points, Whitney Glover had 4, Madison Shope and Hayden Wilson each scored 2 points.

“The girls are beginning to gel as a team and playing with more intensity, but we have to continue to work on eliminating the excessive fouls in the second half to avoid putting our opponents on the free throw line,” Hyams said.

“The guards are handling the ball better, seeing the entire floor, and recognizing opportunities to score,” she added.

The Lady Tigers will travel to East Hall this Friday for a 4 p.m. tip-off. Dawson will host Fannin County on Tuesday. Game time will be 4:15 p.m.
