ASK THE EXPERTS

Weather freezes local sports

POSTED: January 18, 2011 4:30 p.m.

Most high school students welcomed the snow that hit last Sunday night, but it has caused nothing but havoc for area high school wrestling and basketball teams.

Dawson County High School had to cancel basketball games with Mt. Pisgah and East Hall. The school also had to change last Friday’s Region 8-AA match-up with Fannin County to a Saturday afternoon game.

East Hall has been reschedule for tonight in Dawsonville with the varsity girls starting at 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow. The game with Mt. Pisgah will likely not be made up.

The high school wrestling team had to cancel a match at Riverside Military Academy last Tuesday.

Both Riverview and Dawson County middle schools had to call off several games last week, some of which were already rescheduled, due to poor driving conditions and cancellation of schools.

The games are all Mountain League games and will have to be made up. As of press time those dates and times had not been determined yet.

Not only have games been changed, but practices have been almost nonexistent due to the weather. Coaches worry about conditioning in this most important time of year. Basketball is just starting region play and wrestling has their traditional tournament coming up in the next couple of weeks.

The Georgia High School Association has set the following protocol for basketball teams and rescheduled games.

1. Region games that have been postponed must be rescheduled. The competing schools should look for an open Tuesday, Friday or Saturday to reschedule the game.

2. If all of those days are filled, the host school should petition the GHSA Executive Director for a waiver to allow a school to play games on multiple school nights in a week.

3. If non-region games cannot be rescheduled, they may be canceled with mutual consent of the competing schools.

4. Sub-varsity games may need to be canceled to clear days to reschedule varsity games.

5. If the competing schools cannot agree on the rescheduling, each school needs to send its choice to the GHSA office, and the Executive Director will set the date and time for the make-up game.

High school and middle school basketball and wrestling action will heat up this week as teams enter their region schedules full force.

Coaches are hoping the inclement weather will take a break so teams may finish the season without any more interruptions.
