The Dawson County High School varsity girls basketball team traveled to Blue Ridge last Saturday afternoon for a Region 8-AA game with No. 6-ranked and undefeated Fannin County.

The game was moved to Saturday from Friday night due to hazardous driving conditions.

The Lady Rebels proved why they are ranked in the top 10 with a 51-29 win over the Lady Tigers.

Fannin moved to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the region. Dawson fell to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in region play.

The Lady Tigers had a difficult time scoring in the first half. The team managed only 12 points, six points in each quarter, to fall behind 25-12 at halftime.

Fannin continued to use its pressure half court man defense to force bad shots and turnovers by the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers were stagnant in the third quarter, and again only scored six points. Fannin extended its lead to 16-points with a 34-18 lead after three quarters of play.

The scoring picked up for Dawson in the final quarter. The team scored 11 points, however Fannin still outscored the Lady Tigers with 17 points to come away with the 22-point victory.

Dawson didn’t have any player score in double digits.

Hannah Porter, Natalie Parker and Carly Gilreath led all Lady Tigers scorers with six points each. The trio was followed by Kimberly Wallace with four points, Kacie Bearden added three, Morgan Bennett and Morgan Huber each scored two points apiece.

It will be a very busy week for Dawson.

Today, the Lady Tigers will face East Hall (7-5; 1-0) in Dawsonville. The Lady Vikings have a tremendous point guard in junior Jasmine Jenkins who is a 3-year starter for Head Coach Joey Rider’s team. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Friday, the Lady Tigers will play host to Union County (6-5; 0-0). The game will be another important Region 8-AA battle. Game time will be at 7 p.m.

Gilmer County will be the Lady Tigers opponent on Saturday in a non-region contest in Ellijay. Earlier this season the Lady Tigers came away with a 53-42 win. The Lady Bobcats come into the game with a 3-9 record. Tip off will be at 4 p.m.

Next Tuesday the team will travel to Homer to face Banks County. The Lady Leopards come into the contest with a 7-9 overall record and are 0-2 in Region 8-AA play. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m.
