Friends and family gathered earlier this month to honor one man’s commitment and dedication to Amicalola Falls State Park.

The Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge paid tribute to James Leland “Jim” Burson on Nov. 20 by dedicating a stone bench in his honor.

Burson was a longtime supporter of all Georgia State Parks, though friends say Amicalola Falls was his favorite.

“We all know that Jim was a very humble man and never wanted any recognition for anything he did here in the park,” said Kathy Brigman, chapter president of the Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park.

“But we wanted to keep the memory of Jim alive in a way that would honor his commitment and dedication to the park.”

The bench was placed on the West Ridge Trail, which is an ADA compliant walkway that takes visitors to the middle of the falls.

“The trail is one of the most popular trails since it is accessible by wheelchairs, baby strollers and walkers and utilized by visitors who wish to enjoy a short, easy walk to the falls,” Brigman said.

The Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites have been helping preserve and promote state properties since 1993.

The Friends of Amicalola Falls State Park have partnered with the park to repair trails, update bathrooms, beautify the park, repair equipment, sponsor special events and offer help, both monetary and physical, for various projects.

A faithful volunteer, Burson served on the group’s board of directors until his death in April.

“We know that Jim is looking down on us now and is pleased that many people will enjoy the bench and view of the falls,” Brigman said.
