One of the most beloved Broadway musicals comes to life this weekend in Dawsonville.

Featuring sets designed with a cartoon flair and costumes reminiscent of 1950s New York, “Guys and Dolls Jr.” tells the tale of Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the state’s oldest floating crap game, who bets a fellow gambler that he can’t make the next girl he sees fall in love with him.

Director Brooke Caldwell said the actors, who range in age from pre-teen to about 18, have been working on New York accents and are looking forward to opening night.

“I think this is going to be a lot of fun,” she said.

“Guys and Dolls Jr.” is the Bowen Center for the Arts first fall youth production and the second production the acting troupe will take to the Junior Theater Festival.

“Last year, the group got a showcase performance with the play ‘Seussical’ and performed in front of more than 1,000 people,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said her focus for the children’s theater group “is to make sure the kids are learning skills they can incorporate into any aspect of their lives.”

“Guys and Dolls Jr.” opens at 7 p.m. Friday at Dawson County Middle School.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and arts council members and $5 for children and are also available for the 7 p.m. Saturday show and the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
