Group takes aim at turkey shoot

POSTED: October 6, 2010 4:00 a.m.

An organization that promotes conservation and hunting has scheduled its inaugural Turkey and Ham Shoot to raise dollars for youth events.

The local chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation plans to hold the shoot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 6 at Byrd’s Inert Landfill.

The cost is $3 per shot.

Keith Mulkey, chapter president, said targets are set up at 100 feet from the shooter. Participants use shotguns.

Whoever gets the target or closest to the target wins their choice of a ham or turkey.

It’s a fundraiser for youth events that the national nonprofit sponsors like the annual squirrel hunt in Dawson Forest and fishing rodeo at Amicalola State Park.

“We basically try to get kids introduced to hunting and outdoor sports,” Mulkey said. “Kids are the future.”

Byrd’s Inert Landfill is located at 5040 Hwy. 53 East, Dawsonville.
