Eagles improve to 4-1 for season

POSTED: September 28, 2010 4:04 p.m.

The Riverview Middle School football team improved its record to 4-1 following a 14-0 win over Clear Creek Middle School in Ellijay Sept. 23.

“The guys played there hearts out last night,” said Head Coach Mark Thomason.

On the Eagles first possession they drove down the field. Riverview running back Levi Whitmire highlighted the drive with a 45-yard run down to the Clear Creek 10-yard line. After a negative play and a penalty the Eagles scored on a Whitmire to Keagan Matthews pass from 25-yards out. Sal Mendoza added the extra point and Riverview held a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

The score remained 7-0 at halftime in what was a grueling defensive battle.

The Eagles came up big to begin the second half. Clear Creek had a nice drive going but on fourth and two the Riverview defense stuffed them, which gave the Eagles offense the ball back.

Thomason’s offense then played ball control and went on a 7-minute drive.

Riverview added a touchdown on a Mendoza run from 2-yards out with just 1:47 to play in the game.

Josh Sage added the extra point and Riverview held a commanding 14-0 lead.

Clear Creek then went into its 2-minute offense. On a pass across the middle, free safety Levi Whitmire had a big hit on the Clear Creek receiver that caused a fumble. Mendoza recovered and the Eagles ran out the clock for the victory.

“I thought the entire offensive line played great. Levi Whitmire had some nice runs and a huge touchdown pass. Sal Mendoza led us in rushing yards and Keagan Matthews also had a nice touchdown catch,” Thomason said.

“Linebacker Jacob Lord set the tone from the start with several big hits. Austin Martin, Brendan Capps, Gavin Brown, Levi Whitmire, Rhys Adams and Brandon Abbott all played extremely well,” he added.

The Eagles will play at Fannin County this Thursday in a big game. The Rebels are 3-2 on the season. If Riverview loses it will create a 3-way tie for second place.

Kickoff will be at 5 p.m.
