ASK THE EXPERTS

Shore sweep Saturday

POSTED: September 22, 2010 4:00 a.m.

Those who have enjoyed recreational time on Lake Lanier — be it fishing, boating or swimming — may consider pitching in to keep the lake beautiful this weekend.

The Lake Lanier Association is holding its 22nd annual Shore Sweep from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday all around the lake.

In Dawson County, Shore Sweep will be held at War Hill Park.

The association’s executive director, Joanna Cloud, said volunteers have pulled 150,000 pounds of garbage from the shores of Lake Lanier.

“The trash they remove is unsightly at best and dangerous at worst,”  Cloud said.

Volunteers swarmed the lake last year with more than 1,000 people coming out to help, Cloud said.

“For a lot of people, this is an annual tradition,” she said. “They come out and help clean the lake and make it a better place for all of us to enjoy.”

Immediately following Shore Sweep, a volunteer appreciation party is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. at Van Pugh Park in Hall County.

For those not able to attend, there are two advance locations that will be set up from Sept. 22-25 for shore trash disposal: On the south end of the lake, Lanier Harbor Marina, and on the lake’s north end, on the east side of Deer Island.

According to its Web site, the Lake Lanier Association is “the oldest volunteer group working to protect the high water quality as well as the Lake Lanier water level and to preserve its valuable legacy for future generations.”
