ASK THE EXPERTS

Eagles demolish Bobcats

POSTED: September 21, 2010 4:00 p.m.

The Riverview football team staged an impressive 41-0 win over Gilmer County last Thursday in Dawsonville. With the win, Riverview moved to 3-1 on the season.

The Eagles scored fast and often in the first half, amassing a 35-0 lead at intermission. The offensive onslaught started with a returned punt of 40-yards by Levi Whitmore. Sal Mendoza added the extra point and it was quickly 7-0 Eagles.

Riverview’s defense was spectacular all game. On Gilmer’s next possession the defense forced a fumble at the Bobcat 30-yard line. The Eagles took advantage and scored a touchdown on the very next play, a 31-yard run by Austin Martin. The extra point was true and Riverview led 14-0.

The Eagles weren’t finished. With time running down in the first quarter, running back Mendoza took the handoff and sprinted 17-yards for a touchdown. Once again Mendoza added the extra point and it was 21-0 at the end of the first period of play.

In the second quarter, Head Coach Mark Thomason decided to work on his passing game. Quarterback Zac Buchan hit tight end Gavin Brown on a 33-yard touchdown pass, and with the extra point from Mendoza, Riverview held a commanding 28-0 led.

With time running out in the first half, Buchan found wide out Keagan Matthews for a 10-yard touchdown reception. Mendoza connected on the extra point and Riverview held an overwhelming 35-0 advantage going into the dressing room.

Thomason’s squad added one more score in the second half.

Eagle Levi Whitmire took the opening kickoff of the second half and returned it 67-yards for a touchdown. The extra point by Chaz Slaton was no good, and the score was 41-0.

“We got a chance to get everyone in the game,” Thomason said. “We have a big game this week at Clear Creek. They are also 3-1. We need a win to stay in the hunt for the championship game.”

Kick off will be at 5 p.m.
