Head coach Jimmy Pruett’s Dawson County Lady Tiger softball team had a busy and eventful week. On Tuesday the team traveled to Blue Ridge for a game against Region 8-AA foe Fannin County. The Lady Tigers came out on the short end of an 8-inning, 3-2 loss to the Lady Rebels.

Friday and Saturday the team played in the Adairsville softball tournament.

Dawson picked up wins over The Walker School, 11-1, host Adairsville, 9-0, and Cedartown, 8-0, before losing games to No. 2-ranked Heritage-Catoosa by scores of 3-2 and 4-0, and Rockmart, 2-1. With the two losses Dawson picked up a third place trophy for the tournament.

The team is currently 6-7 overall and 2-2 in Region 8-AA.

Against Fannin, the Lady Tigers picked up 10 hits but just couldn’t drive across the winning run as the game went into extra innings.

Dawson was led offensively by Morgan Huber with two singles and Jenna Abbott with three hits, including a double.

The Lady Tigers led 2-1 going into the sixth inning. A walk with one out put a runner on first. The decisive blow in the inning, which eventually led to a 2-2 tie, was an error at third.

In extra innings, the Lady Rebels pushed across the winning run to take the victory.

Abbott pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits with 12 strikeouts.

Dawson opened the Adairsville tournament with a huge win on Friday night against The Walker School, 11-1.

The Lady Tigers scored in every inning to take the victory.

Pruett’s team exploded offensively, picking up 16 hits. The offense was lead by leadoff hitter Kimberly Wallace, who picked up four of those hits and scored two runs as the team overwhelmed their opponent.

Lady Tigers, Kristi Hyams and Carley Gilreath, both had two hits and scored two runs.

Cheyenne Bennett had three hits, all singles, and crossed the plate three times for the Lady Tigers. Bennett also picked up the win on the mound going 5-innings with two strikeouts and allowing only six hits in the shutout.

The Lady Tigers then made short work of host Adairsville, picking up the 9-0 win.

Jenna Abbott picked up the win in the 5-inning affair. Abbott allowed the her opponents only one hit while striking out 12 batters.

Dawson once again had a great game at the plate, picking up 10 hits.

The Lady Tigers were led by Huber. She went 4-for-4 with a triple and a run.

Wallace also went 3-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs.

On Saturday the team played AAA opponent Cedartown. For the second game in a row Dawson County notched a shutout, winning 8-0.

Cheyenne Bennett picked up the win after going 5-innings for the Lady Tigers.

Dawson scored in every inning but the first in tallying the eight runs.

Scoring for the Lady Tigers were: Huber, Gracie Hovan with two runs, Abbott, Hyams with two runs, Katie Pulley and Gilreath.

In the winners bracket the Lady Tigers were matched up with 19-3 Heritage-Catoosa. Heritage is a contender in AAA to win the state title and is ranked  No. 2 in the state behind Oconee County.

Heritage got off to a great start against Lady Tiger starter Jenna Abbott, picking up two runs in the first inning. Dawson roared back to score a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Abbott scored Gracie Hovan.

The Lady Tigers tied the contest in the fourth inning.

Hovan led off the inning with a single. Abbott followed with a double to right field that scored Hovan from first. Things were looking promising with no outs and a runner on second, however two strikeouts and a fly ball to center ended the inning.

Heritage scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, Heritage singled, which was followed by a double scoring the go ahead run and giving the Lady Generals the 3-2 win.

The Lady Tigers finished the tournament with another loss to Heritage Saturday afternoon by a 4-0 score, followed by a loss to Rockmart, 2-1.

Dawson managed only four hits against the Lady Generals. Picking up singles were Huber, Bennett with two hits, and Anna Torres.

Dawson will be back in action this week as they travel to Rabun County on Thursday.

Earlier this month the Lady Tigers defeated Rabun 9-1.

On Sept. 21 the Lady Tigers will play host to East Hall, another Region 8-AA opponent.

Dawson had good luck against East Hall a couple of weeks ago and came away with an 8-0 victory.

Both games will start at 5:55 p.m.
