Riverview Eagles fall to Union County

POSTED: September 14, 2010 4:36 p.m.

The Riverview Middle School football team lost for the first time this season Sept. 9. The Eagles fell to Union County by a 21-7 score. With the loss, the Eagles moved to 2-1 on the season.

This week the Eagles will host Gilmer County. Kickoff will be at 5 p.m.

“We came out flat and played the same way the entire ball game,” said Head Coach Mark Thomason on his team’s performance.

Riverview looked dominating to start the ballgame. The Eagles capitalized on their first offensive possession when quarterback Zach Buchan found tightend Gavin Brown for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Sal Mendoza added the extra point and Riverview jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

That was about all the offense the Eagles could muster the rest of the contest.

Despite nice runs by running back Levi Whitmire, the Eagles just couldn’t get their running game going.

Buchan had a good day throwing the ball, but it wasn’t enough as Riverview dropped the 21-7 decision.

Defense was a sore spot for the Eagles. The Union spread offense kept Riverview guessing all afternoon. Mendoza and Jacob Lord made some big plays on defense. Mendoza had an interception in the game.

“Overall we missed too many tackles and played poorly,” Thomason said. “We will have to do a better job this week against Gilmer. Gilmer has a couple of good backs and it will be a tough ballgame for us.”
