Victims remembered at 9/11 event

POSTED: September 15, 2010 4:00 a.m.

Public safety officials held a 9/11 remembrance service last week to honor those who lost their lives nine years ago during terrorist attacks on U.S. soil.

Mike Owens, a chaplain with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, spoke to the crowd of nearly 100 at the gathering in front of the law enforcement center Sept. 10.

“The Bible instructs us to love our neighbors as ourselves,” Owens said. “This is lived out every day by the men and women of public safety.

“The world saw, firsthand, the horror of Sept. 11, 2001. As public safety kept giving and giving and giving.”

The Dawson County High School chorus sang the national anthem following a prayer by Owens.

After the event, Owens spoke of the importance of continuing remembrance.

“From my perspective as a minister, the Bible says to give honor to whom honor is due. Anytime anybody will lay their life down for us in a situation, they’re worthy of honor and worthy to be remembered.”

Added Owens: “I think it’s important not to forget where we come from, so it helps us to mark where we’re going.”

Other local events that honored those who died Sept. 11, 2001, included a service by the local scouts at Dawson County Emergency Services Station 1 on Memory Lane on Saturday.

Scouts sported their uniforms, while others came in red, white and blue to show support.
