Man in crash with tour bus dies

POSTED: September 2, 2010 12:28 p.m.

The elderly man involved in a collision with a tour bus in Dawson County Wednesday morning has died.

Meabon L. Sanner, 75, of Forsyth County, did not regain consciousness after the pickup truck he was driving collided with a tour bus near Chick-fil-A on Ga. 400, according to emergency personnel.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden said Sanner was pronounced dead around 4 p.m. Wednesday at North Fulton Hospital.

Authorities said Sanner was attempting to turn left across the northbound lanes of Ga. 400. The tour bus struck his Toyota Tacoma on its passenger side.

Rickey Gooch, road manager and sound technician for Dahlonega-based gospel trio Karen Peck and New River, was driving the group's tour bus when the collision occurred.

"Rickey tried to miss it but he couldn't," Karen Peck told a Georgia State Trooper at the scene.

Sanner was unconscious and unresponsive when medical personnel arrived shortly after 10:30 a.m., according to emergency personnel.

He was airlifted with head injuries to North Fulton Hospital in "very critical condition," said Billy Thurmond, director of Dawson County Emergency Services.

The flight crew was en route to Atlanta Medical Center when Sanner's conditioned worsened and they made an emergency stop at the hospital in North Fulton, Thurmond said.

Dawn Hughes, a passenger on the tour bus, was also injured in the wreck and taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

A note from Peck on the official website for Karen Peck and New River listed Hughes as having broken her finger.  The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation.

According to the group's website, Karen Peck and New River performed in Branson, Mo., on Sunday and Monday.

Funeral services plans for Sanner were not yet available.
