Weather played a major role this week for the Dawson County High School softball team. Thunderstorms on Tuesday caused a cancellation of a game at Pickens County, which was played on Wednesday under threatening skies in Jasper.

Then Saturday, the Lanier Point Tournament was cancelled, for the second weekend in a row, because of rain and field conditions.

Dawson’s game against Pickens on Wednesday may have been a result of not playing. Pickens defeated the Lady Tigers, 2-0, on a bases loaded single by Megan Dixon in the fifth inning against Dawson pitcher Jenna Abbott.

The Lady Tigers had only three hits in the contest, all were singles. Picking up hits were Katie Pulley, Gracie Hovan and Morgan Huber.

Pickens had five hits in the game off of Abbott.

Head Coach Jimmy Pruett’s team struck out eight times against freshman pitcher Savannah Buck.

Dawson threatened in the second inning after a 2-out single by Pulley.

After two wild pitches by Buck, Pulley was unable to score after Buck recorded a strike out to end the inning.

It looked like the third inning would get some runs on the board for Dawson.

Huber singled with two-outs and was followed by a hit to centerfield by Hovan. A towering fly ball to center was the third out, killing the rally.

The only other chance to score came in the fifth inning. With one out, Kimberly Wallace reached first on an error and then stole second base. Huber followed with a walk. But once again the Lady Tigers couldn’t find the clutch hit.

Pruett’s team is currently in the middle of an eight day layoff. The team won’t play again until Aug. 26 when they take on Rabun County.

The junior varsity Lady Tigers will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 5:55 p.m. The game will be the team’s first region game of the season.

On Aug. 31 Dawson will travel to East Hall for another region game. Junior varsity game will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 5:55 p.m.

The Lanier Point tournament had not been rescheduled as of press time.
