Considered by many to be the University of Georgia’s greatest quarterback in history, David Greene took time out of his schedule to speak to the local Jaycee’s club last week.

Greene, who held the record as the winningest quarterback in NCAA Division I history with 42 victories until last year spoke to the club about his football career at both South Gwinnett High School and the University of Georgia.

“Most people would think that from the start everything would have been just peaches and cream, that I’d always had success playing football,” Greene said last Friday, speaking at the Dawson County Jaycees monthly meeting.

On the contrary, Greene said the varsity team during his sophomore year of high school was so bad, players “wouldn’t be caught dead wearing letterman jerseys.

“We were just awful...about the worst team,” he said.

Greene said the luckiest thing to ever happen to him was getting a new coach, because the new coach realized Greene’s potential.

“I went from not getting a stinking letter to the following year being recruited by Division I schools,” he said.

Greene had a guarantee before his senior year to play for Georgia, although he’d grown up as an Auburn fan.

Greene led the Bulldogs to a Sugar Bowl victory in 2002, the same year the team won the SEC championship and went on to break Peyton Manning’s record for most NCAA career wins.

As a third round draft pick for the Seattle Seahawks in 2005, he also played for the New England Patriots, Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts, before retiring after the 2008 season.

Greene returned to Atlanta in September 2008 and co-founded an insurance brokerage firm, along with fellow former Bulldog Matt Stinchcomb.

The Dawson County Jaycees meet at noon the third Friday of each month at Chestatee Golf Club.
